Veneers Q & A
What are veneers?
When you have irregularities in your teeth, veneers are a cosmetic option to fix them. These super thin sheets of porcelain, about the thickness of a contact lens, fit over your existing teeth. The doctors customize them to match your existing teeth is size, shape, and color to create uniformity in your smile. Veneers improve your smile’s look and help with tooth strength and resiliency.
Who is a candidate for veneers?
If you have smile complaints, veneers may be an option. They treat issues such as poorly shaped teeth, fractures, chips, and gaps. They also whiten your teeth, which is helpful to anyone who has discoloration resistant to peroxide-based whiteners.
Veneers even make a difference when you have minor misalignments in your bite or crookedness. The doctors look at your particular concerns to determine if veneers or another cosmetic fix is right for you.
What is involved in getting veneers?
If you and the doctors decide veneers are right for you, you’ll be scheduled for two appointments. At the first appointment, your dentist will file down a very small amount of your existing enamel so the porcelain veneer can fit neatly. The doctor then takes a mold of your teeth that’s sent off to a lab where your veneers are made. You’re fitted with temporary veneers in the meantime.
At the next appointment, your veneers adhere permanently to your teeth. The doctor makes any necessary adjustments and seals them in place using a special compound resin. Your fit and bite are optimized, so you get a smile that’s just right for you. You can eat and drink normally after your appointment.
How do you care for porcelain veneers?
Care for veneers is no different than for natural teeth. Brush at least twice daily, floss once per day, and come in for regular professional cleanings. These good hygiene habits keep your veneers strong and looking their best.
Veneers last about 10 years with good care. You’ll probably need to replace them at some point.
